Inside the World of Meg Schmitt

Meg Schmitt, a New York native, is an Editorial Stylist in the E-Commerce realm for the large department store and luxury retailer Nordstrom. Color theory, trend forecasting, and traveling between Seattle and New York for shoots is all in a day’s work. Schmitt studied Apparel and Textile Design at the Seattle Central Academy and went to work for Nordstrom after graduating. On her off days Schmitt is road tripping and exploring the world her pup and partner-in-crime Jackie Brown.

Originally from New York City what brought you to Seattle?
I think everyone when they grow up should move away. I knew I wanted to move to the west coast and I didn’t necessarily want to go to LA. The weather intrigued me about Seattle so here I am. Ten years later.

Did you always want to pursue design & styling?
Actually no. I use to work with animals. About six years ago I decided I didn’t want to do that anymore. It became really emotionally draining. I had always loved fashion and styling so it seemed like a natural switch. I had some friends go through the design program at Seattle Central Academy and they went into the industry straight out of the program… so I went for it.

What are some of your current style influences?
Color. I was all black everyday girl for several years. In 2013 I began to branch out and now I’m color crazy.

What opened you up to color?
I actually think it was my job. Playing with the apparel in the mainstream e-commerce market.

Favorite Designers?
Kenzo, APC, and Topshop (for their basics and denim). Prada, No. 6, Swedish Hasbeens, and Bass for shoes. I’m kind of a shoe freak.

Where do you shop?
I wear a lot of vintage I love the Fremont Vintage Mall and Atlas Clothing.
For art/home/object I like Totokaelo.

Who do you find influential in their style?
I love the ladies of the Advanced Style Blog. I tend to look to people in that age group for style tips… they’re never afraid to mess around with color in a fun and crazy way.  I love the Karen Walker Campaign with the women from Advanced Style. I also look at inanimate objects for color combination inspiration like flower arrangements and taking trips to the market.

What’s on your current personal soundtrack?
Mazzy Star, Grouper, Zola Jesus, Hole, Grave Babes, The Cure, and The Smiths.

You and your pup, Jackie Brown, are packing up and hitting the road. Where are you guys going and what do you plan on doing?
I’m going to Sante Fe and Taos. I’m staying in an earth ship in Taos and I’m planning on stopping by Archies National Park along the way. Once we leave New Mexico we plan on going onto Sedona and Joshua Tree National Park. We’ll stop in Los Angeles and then make our way back up to the Pacific Northwest and stay in the Redwoods for a few days.

Capsule Show: NY Women’s 2014

Last month I traveled with my dear friend and creative partner (in crime) Carmen Daneshmandi to Capsule’s Womenswear Trade Show in New York City. It was so invigorating seeing so many talented and independent designers from New York, the west coast, and around the world. The Street style was equally as fantastic… check it out! xo
